The 7 characteristics of a strong team

Teamwork is the foundation of enjoyment at and in your work. Together, we know more and perform better. In short: together you’ll get much further than on your own. Sharing knowledge and successes, and creating a positive work atmosphere, are essential to making your job more enjoyable and increasing job satisfaction.

What are the 7 characteristics of a strong team?

1. Everyone is different

A strong team consists of different people with different qualities that complement each other. A key condition, of course, is mutual respect. We tend to judge quickly, but things aren’t always what they seem at first glance. Treat your colleagues the way you would like to be treated.

Do you appreciate it when colleagues support you? Then do the same for them. Cover a shift occasionally, go the extra mile, and help your teammates, so they’ll be there for you too.

2. Trust

Trust is something you can build on. When you trust each other, you know what to expect and what you can rely on. To build trust, it’s important to make shared agreements, and keep them! If you show trust, you’ll receive it in return. A colleague or manager who knows you keep your promises will trust you more easily.

3. Communication

Communication is more than making agreements about the work you do together. It also means taking an interest in one another. Being involved, knowing what’s going on in someone’s life. In a good team, this can be discussed openly.

The advantage? You can take into account how your colleague is doing. If someone says something that bothers you, be honest about it. If you want to grow together as a strong team, honesty is essential.

4. The right coach

For strong team performance, a good division of tasks is important. In busy moments, let everyone do what they do best. Make use of everyone’s talents. But also give emerging talent the chance to learn.

As an employee, you play an important role. Be patient yet clear with colleagues, give trust, and use the strengths within the group. Want to learn something yourself? Let your colleagues and/or manager know.

5. Fun!

When a team functions well, there’s room for laughter and light-heartedness. Stay friendly toward one another and keep conflicts professional instead of personal. This creates a more pleasant atmosphere for the entire team.

When you create a fun, positive vibe together, and show that you enjoy being a team, guests or customers will feel that positive energy as well.

6. Give compliments!

Everyone loves to feel appreciated. So give each other compliments regularly. By expressing appreciation often, you help colleagues feel good and approach their work with confidence. The whole team benefits from this—it boosts team spirit.

7. Celebrate successes

How satisfied are your guests? Did you achieve strong sales, or turn an unexpectedly busy moment into a success thanks to teamwork? Acknowledge it!

Whenever you achieve a success—no matter how small—celebrate it! Why? Because it gives you energy, motivates you by showing what you’re capable of, strengthens team spirit, and encourages you to do even better next time.

True teams celebrate successes and even more importantly, they celebrate each other’s successes. Consider linking a fun team activity to a great achievement!

A strong team starts with you. Speak up, give each other feedback, show interest, contribute to a positive work atmosphere, and do your part to build a strong team feeling.
